AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships, designed to further
international understanding and goodwill, provide for
academic or vocational study abroad in one of the 184
countries where Rotary Clubs are located. Ambassadorial
Scholarships for one academic year abroad beginning
after July 2006 provide a maximum of $25,000 to cover
round-trip transportation, academic fees for a normal
course load, reasonable living costs, some educational
supplies, one-month of brush-up intensive language training
before commencing academic studies (if needed and assigned
by the Foundation), and perhaps limited educational
travel and contingency expenses.
Applicants may apply only through one Rotary Club in
the Rotary district (i.e., Los Angeles) that is the
applicant's legal permanent residence or current place
of full time study or employment. Applicants must have
completed two years of university attendance or professional
work experience before starting scholarship studies.
Scholars may be of any age (over 18) and may be married,
but spouses are not provided for. Rotarians, their spouses
or direct relatives of Rotarians may not apply.
The ideal candidate is an “all-around person,”
not just an academic star. The applicant should evidence
activities, which demonstrate initiative including leadership
roles in school and community as well as scholastic
achievement. The committee encourages applications that
have a clear sense of purpose underpinning the overseas
study program. Rotary Foundation Scholars are expected
to promote international understanding by being outstanding
representatives of Rotary International and their country
as “Ambassadors of Goodwill.” Through appearance
before Rotary Clubs, public and other forums, scholars
are expected to share their experiences with the people
of their sponsoring districts and host countries. District
5280 may give preference to scholars who will be in
the Los Angeles area for the entire year preceding the
award year for familiarization with Rotary activities
and limited interaction with the sponsoring club and
District.
The deadline for completed applications is currently
expected to be March 31. After interviews of applicants
by a club committee (in early April – though some
scheduling flexibility may exist for out of area applicants)
a maximum of 3 candidates are recommended to the Rotary
District Scholarships Committee. This group, in turn,
interviews applicants in early to mid May making final
selections at that time. Final approval (generally granted)
by the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation follows by
October 1st. By 15 December the scholars study institution
selection is confirmed; only then can they begin the
process of applying to the assigned university for admission.
The following months are spent preparing for their studies
abroad, including gaining admission and passing a language
exam to show proficiency in the language of the host
country (if different from the scholar’s native
tongue). Generally, scholars will not be assigned to
a country where they have recently lived or studied.
In addition, the Trustees strive for a wide geographic
distribution of scholars in order to accomplish the
program’s overall objectives. Therefore, applicants
must be flexible in their study destinations. On the
application, each candidate may list up to five study
institution preferences in at least three different
countries. Only a small percentage of Rotary Scholars
are assigned to frequently requested destinations such
as London and Paris. Candidates seeking to study in
developing countries or less traditional study destinations
are more likely to be assigned to their first choice.
WORLD PEACE SCHOLARSHIP
The Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace
and conflict resolution will provide opportunities for
scholars to focus on dealing effectively with the obstacles
that currently impede international cooperation and
peace. Through partnerships with outstanding universities
throughout the world, the Rotary Centers will advance
knowledge on issues of peace and conflict resolution
among the next generation of community and world leaders.
The Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace
and Conflict Resolution offer individuals committed
to peace and cooperation the opportunity to pursue a
two-year master's level degree in international studies,
peace studies, and conflict resolution at one of the
seven Rotary Centers. Applicants selected to study at
the Rotary Centers for International Studies are known
as Rotary World Peace Scholars.
- Rotary World Peace Scholars are chosen based on
their ability to have a significant, positive impact
on world peace and conflict resolution during their
future careers.
- They have demonstrated a commitment to a career
in peace and conflict resolution.
- Rotary World Peace Scholars are expected to excel
academically in their selected programs, to accept
the academic counsel and advice of the Rotary Center
Director, and to obtain a master's degree or certificate
at the conclusion of their scholarship period.
- They are expected to participate in an annual Rotary
Center Seminar.
- Rotary World Peace Scholars will serve as ambassadors
of goodwill wherever they go.
- They are expected to make formal and informal appearances
before Rotary clubs and districts, school and civic
organizations, and other forums.
- Rotary World Peace Scholars will be expected to
participate in district, regional, and international
Rotary events.
- Rotary World Peace Scholars are expected to maintain
contact with The Rotary Foundation throughout their
professional careers in order to advise and assist
Rotary International and its member clubs in their
efforts to contribute to world peace and understanding.
Scholars are also expected to help evaluate and promote
the Rotary World Peace Scholarships program.
Rotary District 5280 nominates one candidate for the
world-competitive selection each year. Applications
are completed approximately 18 months in advance of
the planned study period. LA5 Rotary club-endorsed applicant
competes at the district level. Each district is eligible
to submit one candidate to compete at the world level.
The Rotary Foundation and the university partners select
and then notify the Rotary World Peace Scholars of their
Rotary Center assignments by the end of the calendar
year in which they apply.
